Seven Brothers, One Goal

Nature blessed all seven of the Stanley Brothers with brains and good looks. And they realized early on that plants are just like bros. If they grew hemp with better genes, it would possess more healing properties. So, in 2011, after three years of farming existing cultivars, they began exploring the power of genetics. They aimed to develop unique hybrids.

A little girl with Dravet Syndrome (SMEI: Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy) inspired the brand in 2012. Charlotte was her name and by age five, she had daily seizures. The Stanley Brothers had been growing medical marijuana since 2008. But Charlotte’s case needed something different. So the siblings used their expertise to develop a plant high in CBD.

A Wellness Mission Becomes a Business

The oil made from the Stanley Brothers’ new hybrid helped improve Charlotte’s condition. At first, the Stanley Brothers remained determined to stick to medical marijuana. But then CNN medical reporter Sanjay Gupta got wind of Charlotte’s groundbreaking treatment. He shared it with the world. And soon the brother’s phones started ringing nonstop for CBD.

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil, as they christened their new product, helped grow their operation. At first, they distributed it through a non-profit called The Realm of Caring. But soon, requests for the oil outstripped their production capacity. To overcome this challenge, they turned their caring mission into a viable business. They could then expand to meet demand.

Growing Responsibly in Leaps and Bounds

In 2014, the siblings opened their first lab and manufacturing plant in Boulder, Colorado. They produced 41,000 lbs of hemp in 2016. In 2018, they expanded their farming operations into Kentucky and Oregon. That same year they had a bumper crop of 675,000 lbs of hemp. They opened the new and larger Stanley Brothers Labs facility to process this vast harvest.

In 2019, Stanley Brothers teamed with the Rodale Institute*, which specializes in regenerative organic farming. At that time, over 50% of the source crop for Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil was certified organic. The remainder began the process of organic transitioning. The company had by this point planted 862 acres of hemp, so it’s an impressive feat.
